Ikonstudio, a Canadian design outfit founded by David Feldberg, has launched its inaugural collections of historic furniture, blending architectural inspiration from iconic figures like Louis Kahn and the renowned architecture studio SOM. These collections aim to reinterpret historical designs for modern audiences, aligning with global design movements such as NYCxDesign and Chicago Design Week. Feldberg emphasizes that the collections are not simply nostalgic but instead extend architectural thought, focusing on creating bespoke pieces designed for specific buildings rather than mass production. He notes that these designs draw from archival work and contemporary materials, offering a new chapter in the legacy of historic architecture. The first collection features furniture and textiles from Kahn’s 1953 Radbill Oil Company building and the ML Weiss House, while the SOM Collection includes works from Rarify’s SOM79 Chair and SOM79 Lounge, designed by Charles Pfister. These creations reflect a shift toward integrating historical IP into today’s design landscape, inspired by projects like Steelcase’s reimagined Frank Lloyd Wright designs.
