While tourists flock to the beaches, the South West faces a stark reality, where children's prospects are limited by socioeconomic factors. The South West Social Mobility Commission highlights the region's poor educational performance, with GCSE results revealing a stark disparity. Professor Tanya Ovenden-Hope describes this as "pretty poverty," emphasizing the impact on young people's potential. The issue extends beyond academic achievement, as the region's unique challenges, such as high housing costs and limited transportation options, hinder access to educational opportunities. The need for a car, a necessity in rural areas, is not adequately captured by government deprivation measures, leading to misallocation of resources. This situation affects teacher recruitment and retention, impacting the quality of education. Headteacher Dominic Wilkes, who moved from Greater Manchester to Bude, North Cornwall, highlights the challenges faced by students in coastal towns. The limited range of employers and the distance to educational institutions, such as museums and universities, restrict students' exposure to diverse career paths. For instance, Year 10 pupil Ethan dreams of becoming a marine biologist but must travel three hours by car for work experience. The region's economic reliance on tourism and farming further exacerbates the problem, with young adults seeking opportunities elsewhere. The South West Mobility Commission also raises concerns about persistent school absence and low university attendance rates among those who received free school meals. Only 19% of these students go on to get a degree, compared to the national average of 29%. This disparity is a significant barrier to social mobility. The situation is so dire that the South West Social Mobility Commission is pushing for locally generated solutions, such as the Colyton Foundation's Your Future Story program, which supports lower-income students through university. However, the region's challenges are complex and require tailored approaches. The government's Mission Coastal initiative, which aims to improve education in coastal areas, may not be sufficient for the more rural and coastal South West. The key lies in recognizing and addressing the unique socioeconomic factors that limit educational opportunities in this beautiful yet struggling region.
