The world is facing a pollinator crisis, and it's not just about the bees. A new study reveals that rising carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels may be putting pollinators, including bees and hoverflies, at risk. Larger bees, such as Bombus asiaticus and Xylocopa pubescens, are the most vulnerable. These big bees are already more susceptible to climate change due to their heat retention and metabolic demands. They are also among our most effective pollinators, carrying and depositing more pollen than smaller-bodied species. This is concerning because these large bees play a crucial role in plant reproduction and gene spread. The study, conducted in Pakistan, examined how bees and hoverflies cope with different CO₂ levels across 25 sites. It found that smaller pollinators may actually do better in higher-CO₂ environments, while larger-bodied pollinators were less abundant in areas with more CO₂. This is a dire situation, as Australia contributes to higher CO₂ levels as the second-largest fossil fuel exporter in the world. The study highlights the need to protect pollinator habitats, ensure access to wildlife corridors, plant more bee-friendly trees, and maintain populations of larger-bodied bees. Without these measures, our pollinators may struggle to survive in a rapidly changing climate.
